American pastor, musician, and former alcoholic Reverend Michael McInelly shares his experience being possessed by a demon, tumbling into hell, and being saved by God.
Michael’s alcoholism and depression spiraled after leaving his band. His drinking escalated to a half-gallon [3.8 liters] daily, combined with anti-anxiety medication. One day, unable to drown his despair, he sat with liquor and Xanax, planning to end his life. An inner voice urged him to seek help, and he entered a 30-day rehab.
After release, feeling possessed by a demonic presence, Michael returned to rehab under suicide watch. In 2013, while detoxing, he realized he was sober for the first time in years. Overwhelmed by withdrawal symptoms, he panicked, tied a shoelace around his neck, and lost consciousness, just as nurses stepped in horrified.
Michael found himself in complete darkness, utterly alone, describing it as a cold, isolating hell— not fiery brimstone, but a profound sense of abandonment, just as he felt all those times he drank alone.
Then Michael was drawn to a tunnel of Light radiating love, emerging in a vivid, otherworldly realm. The colors were magnified, flowing like watercolors, with intense smells and a tangible feeling of love. He saw pastures, a river, wildlife, and a captivating tree by flowing water that reminded him of the Tree of Life. Before Michael stood three Figures: a golden, bearded Man he mistook for his father (dead since he was 14), a platinum-like Figure, and a blinding Light. To the right, a man paced in a hallway— later believed to be Michael’s father interceding for him.
Though Michael had rejected God years earlier, Michael felt the three Beings were aspects of God and were judging him. A Voice said: “Son, it’s not your time. You have unfinished business. Go back.”
Michael awoke on the floor to his name being called, first softly, then louder. A doctor and nurse told him he had died from addiction. Terrified and unwilling to return, Michael resisted and fought the medical team until sedated. Later discharged, his wife warned him not to look back.
Days later, Michael returned to drinking, ashamed, and even attended church drunk, seeking redemption through baptism. Eight months later, hospitalized again, he finally admitted powerlessness and joined Alcoholics Anonymous [AA]. An older man told him to stop beating himself up and listen. Another AA member’s words— “If nobody’s told you they love you today, I do, and Jesus does too”— became a turning point, echoing the love Michael felt in his near-death experience.
Reverend Michael embraced sobriety, became an ordained pastor and peer support specialist, and sponsored thousands in AA. He believes God sent him back to share his testimony, especially with musicians struggling with addiction (Destiny Image)
