American businesswoman Barbara Bartolome shares her near-death experience: In 1987, 31-year-old Barbara was scheduled for spinal surgery after injuring her back. During a pre-surgery imaging test, a fatal error occurred: The X-ray table was tipped the wrong way, sending iodine dye into her brain. She instantly lost consciousness and found herself floating on the ceiling, calmly watching the scene below.
From above, Barbara saw doctors and nurses rushing, the technician calling “Code Blue.” She wasn’t frightened but felt wrapped in love, as if covered in a warm blanket. Beside her was a vast, loving presence—immense, eternal, and deeply connected to her. Barbara communicated silently, telling the presence she needed to return to life for her infant daughter and young son, and because she hadn’t completed her life’s purpose, which she suddenly knew as she floated there near the ceiling.
Below, Barbara saw a woman place an oxygen mask on her body and another call for a defibrillator. A man set up a heart monitor, showing a green flat line. Barbara realized she was clinically dead. She watched as the orthopedic surgeon took two steps forward, told everyone to stand clear, and struck her chest with his fist— a precordial thump. The first blow failed. The second brought her back. In one blink, Barbara went from ceiling to body, opening her eyes to see the doctor’s face.
Panicked but alive, Barbara told the staff she’d been on the ceiling watching everything. When the neurosurgeon scoffed, she recited every detail— the equipment, conversations, and the two chest blows— until his face turned white and he stormed out. Others stayed, astonished but listening. Later, most staff refused to discuss it, and even her husband dismissed it as a hallucination, so Barbara kept silent for years.
What stayed with her, though, was the loving being’s final question: “If you go back, you will still be in your marriage. What will you do about that?” Barbara had been in an abusive relationship, and though she gave her husband a chance to change, things hadn’t improved. Barbara said, “If you let me go back, then I promise I’ll become strong enough to leave him.” At that moment, the doctor struck her chest and she revived.
Three years later, Barbara found the strength to leave the marriage— something she credits to her near-death experience. It left her with unshakable faith that consciousness is eternal. “Life continues past the point of death. You, who you are, is not the physical life that you’re experiencing right now. You are a spiritual being having a physical experience.”
When loved ones pass, Barbara feels sadness but not despair, knowing they still exist and can feel her love from the other side. This realization has fundamentally shifted her view of life. “We’re here to learn and grow and to love and to care for other people, to be kind, to make the world a better place. That’s my message” (Anthony Chene production)
Insightful quote of the day: “If you could only love enough, you could be the most powerful person in the world.” — The Reverend Emmet Fox Irish New Thought Spiritual Leader
